From Bimini to NBA Stardom, VJ Edgecombe Grateful for His Humble Beginnings

VJ Edgecombe, hailing from Bimini, is making waves in professional basketball and also inspiring a new generation of Caribbean athletes. His rise to NBA stardom marks a significant moment for The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean region, showcasing the potential of players from this part of the world on the biggest stage in basketball.
Early Life and Basketball Beginnings in Bimini
VJ Edgecombe’s story begins in Bimini, a small island known more for its beautiful beaches than for producing professional athletes. Growing up in the Abaco Islands of The Bahamas, Edgecombe started playing when he was seven or eight and played in youth leagues and development camps. The community in Bimini played a crucial role in nurturing his skills. Local courts became his training ground, and supportive coaches encouraged him to pursue his dreams beyond the island. He credits NBA player Buddy Hield as a mentor.
He told The Players' Tribune -“We’re from Bimini. Our island is seven miles long, half a mile wide. So if a tsunami come, pray for us! But seriously, things like this don’t happen for our people every day. Getting to the NBA is hard. Getting to the NBA from Bimini? I don’t know the exact odds, but it’s gotta be like 0.000001% chance. That’s probably not even enough zeros, to be honest...."
Like many young athletes, Edgecombe balanced schoolwork with intense basketball training. His dedication to both academics and athletics laid a strong foundation for his future.
To reach the NBA, Edgecombe had to move beyond Bimini and compete at higher levels. This transition was a critical phase in his career. he credits his upbringing as the biggest blessng.
"Growing up, I spent most of my time outside in the yard playing with my cousins or on a court somewhere with my friends. We didn’t have electricity running through the house during the daytime usually. We didn’t have everything we wanted, but we had everything we needed, you know? My mom made sure of that. Edgecombe moved to the U.S. to attend high school and later college, where he faced tougher competition and gained valuable experience. His performance in these leagues caught the attention of scouts and coaches. Moving from a small island to the U.S. basketball scene required adaptability, but Edgecombe’s ability and detrminaton to adjust to different playing styles and cultures helped him grow as a player.
He attended Victory International Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida for two years before transferring to Long Island to attend Lutheran Middle and High School in Brookville, New York. While there, he was named New York Gatorade Player of the Year and the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) Player of the Year at the end of the season.
Edgecombe averaged 17.3 points, six rebounds, four assists, and 2.3 steals per game to lead the Crusaders to a 21–5 record, as a senior, while also being selected to play in the 2024 McDonald's All-American Boys Game.
Transition to Competitive Basketbal
Making it to the NBA is a dream for many players, but a reality for few. Edgecombe’s entry into the league is a testament to his skill and perseverance.
After impressive college performances, by 2025 Edgecombe was drafted into the NBA. He was selected with the third overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2025 NBA draft. His early games showed promise, with his speed, shooting, and defensive skills standing out.
Like many rookies, Edgecombe faced challenges such as intense competition for playing time and the physical demands of the NBA. His resilience and continuous improvement helped him secure his place.
In his NBA regular season debut on October 22, 2025, Edgecombe scored 34 points, pulled down seven rebounds and collected three assists to help the Sixers to a 117–116 win against the Boston Celtics. Giving Back to Bimini
Throughout his career, Edgecombe already started building bridges between Caribbean basketball communities and professional leagues, opening doors for future players. He created a scholarship fund for kids at the school he went to in the Bahamas with NIL money he was getting in college. Back in April 2026, Edgecombe brought critical services to families in Bimini during Autism Awareness Month.
Edgecombe’s success carries significant meaning for Caribbean basketball. His journey inspires young players across the Caribbean to believe that they too can reach the NBA. Seeing someone from a small island succeed on a global stage motivates many to pursue basketball seriously. His presence in the NBA brings attention to the talent pool in the Caribbean, and this increased visibility can lead to more scouting and investment in basketball programs in the region.
2025-2026 Season
The rookie is playing a major role for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2026 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks, having just starred in a Game 7 win against Boston. In the first-round series clincher against the Celtics, he exploded for 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 three-pointers.
After a stellar opening round, he started Game 1 of the semifinals at Madison Square Garden, playing 28 minutes and recording 12 points (5-11 FG), 2 assists, and 1 steal during a 137-98 loss to the Knicks. As a 2026 rookie starter, the former Baylor star is drawing praise for his high-level scoring and defensive ability against elite opponents.
